The Catalano Grid / Milwaukee, WI

The Catalano Grid is a five-story residential/retail building located in the heart of the Third Ward downtown Milwaukee. This project tasked us with designing a building according to the Historic Third Ward design guidelines and utilizing a versatile material like terra cotta. Being the corner, we found it best to combine aspects of the context on either side of the building. We brought the gridded structure over from Erie St and added to the terra cotta brick look of Broadway. We included ample glazing offering the user(s) large views of the city. Users bedrooms are equipped with an operable shading system to reduce light clutter. As a studio, we scanned the existing site along with surrounding buildings in order to have the most accurate datum available to use in our drawings.
